The San Francisco Giants scored nine runs in the 11th inning to defeat the Chicago Cubs site 14-5 at Wrigley Field Tuesday night. The late surge followed the Cubs tying the game in the bottom of the ninth inning.
The Cubs Game appeared headed for a different outcome after the Giants held a late lead. San Francisco relief pitcher Ryan Walker allowed the tying run in the ninth inning. Chicago’s Kyle Tucker singled off left-hander Erik Miller to level the score at five.
The Giants responded dramatically in the top of the 11th. Patrick Bailey hit an RBI single to break the tie, giving San Francisco a 6-5 lead. Brett Wisely executed a squeeze bunt that allowed Heliot Ramos to score, extending the advantage.
San Francisco continued to add runs. Willy Adames was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Jung Hoo Lee and Matt Chapman followed with RBI singles. Wilmer Flores also contributed an RBI single before Heliot Ramos drove in another run with a double. Bailey then hit a sacrifice fly. The Giants sent 12 batters to the plate in the inning.
Giants starter Justin Verlander allowed three earned runs over five innings pitched. Verlander entered the game with a 4.38 ERA. He remains without a win in eight starts. For the Chicago Cubs, right-hander Colin Rea started, allowing two runs over six innings. Rea entered the game with a 1.46 ERA.
The win put the Giants and Cubs at identical 22-14 records following the contest. Rookie Kyle Harrison pitched a scoreless 11th inning for the Giants.
