The San Diego Padres defeated the New York Yankees 4-3 on Monday night at Yankee Stadium, overcoming a late deficit with a four-run rally in the eighth inning.

The Padres trailed 3-0 heading into the eighth before mounting their rally. The offensive outburst followed the ejection of Padres manager Mike Shildt and player Fernando Tatis Jr.

After F. Tatis Jr. was called out on strikes, he was ejected from the game by home-plate umpire Adrian Johnson. Shildt then came onto the field and was also ejected.

Following the ejections, Luis Arraez walked to load the bases with two outs. Manny Machado then hit a double to score two runs.

Xander Bogaerts followed with a single, driving in two additional runs to give the Padres a 4-3 lead.

Yankees starter Carlos Rodón held the Padres scoreless over 6 2/3 innings. Padres starter Nick Pivetta allowed three runs, one unearned, over 5 2/3 innings.

Trent Grisham hit a two-run home run for the Yankees. Rain delays impacted the game in the early innings.

The Padres bullpen preserved the lead in the later innings to secure the victory. The outcome impacts MLB Standings in both leagues early in the season.

Earlier Monday, outfielder Jackson Merrill rejoined the Padres.
