Pete Alonso has started the 2025 season strongly for the New York Mets, leading them to the top of the National League East standings. Despite his performance, a recent survey of MLB executives ranked him behind two other free agent signings.
Twenty executives were asked to name the best free agent deals made this past winter. Alex Bregman received eight votes, Nick Pivetta received four votes, and Pete Alonso received three votes.
Alonso signed a two-year, $54 million deal to remain with the Mets. Through the first month of the season, he has posted a .345/.473/.664 slash line with eight home runs and 30 runs batted in. He leads the National League in on-base percentage and slugging percentage.
His production has been viewed as a key factor in the Mets' early success, especially as outfielder Juan Soto, who signed a record contract with the club, has not yet reached his usual offensive output.
Bregman joined the Red Sox on a three-year, $120 million contract. He batted .331/.400/.609 with eight home runs and 27 runs batted in over his first 33 games for Boston. Executives pointed to his fit with the team and performance level matching his salary.
Pivetta, a right-handed pitcher, signed a four-year, $55 million deal with the Padres. He has posted a 5-1 record with a 1.78 ERA in his first six starts for San Diego. Executives noted the value the Padres received for a starting pitcher who has performed at a high level.
Other players receiving votes in the survey included Carson Kelly, Jorge Polanco, and Roki Sasaki, each with one vote.
