Atlanta Braves right-hander AJ Smith-Shawver's bid for a no-hitter against the Cincinnati Reds was broken up in the eighth inning Monday night.
Santiago Espinal led off the eighth with a clean single to center field, ending the no-hit attempt.
The hit came on the 93rd pitch thrown by Smith-Shawver.
Smith-Shawver worked into the eighth inning for the first time in his professional career.
He struck out five batters and issued four walks. Two walks came in the first inning and two more in the fourth.
AJ Smith-Shawver had given up at least four hits in all four of his prior starts this season.
He got a popup and a double play after Espinal's hit to end the eighth.
Smith-Shawver was lifted after throwing 99 pitches with Atlanta holding a 4-0 lead.
Enyel De Los Santos entered the game in the ninth inning for the Braves.
