Republican U.S. Rep. John James announced his campaign for governor of Michigan, highlighting education as a primary focus. James described poor student reading rates in the state as a "crime" and called education a "basic civil right."
In a recent interview, James named "academic excellence" as one of his top three priorities for the state, alongside economic mobility and public safety. He said fixing education starts with focusing on literacy and providing teachers with needed resources.
Citing statistics on reading and literacy in Michigan, including Detroit, James stated, "That is, I believe, a crime, and education is a basic civil right, and anyone who gets in the way of anyone's civil rights... will have the state and the governor to answer to on my watch."
He advocates for increased transparency and giving parents choice in education, suggesting that the current system protects a small percentage of ineffective actors rather than the majority of good teachers and students. James proposes judging schools based on outcomes, allowing parents to choose where their children are educated using a clear, apples-to-apples comparison.
On the economy, James characterized Michigan's environment as "adversarial to businesses." Drawing on his experience leading a family business that grew significantly, he stated his desire to make that type of growth story more common.
James supports cutting regulatory red tape, implementing tax reform, and enacting tort reform to make Michigan more hospitable to businesses. He noted that the state is often not even considered by companies looking to relocate.
Regarding his decision to run, James stated he sought input from his family and faith. An insider report noted that he informed former President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance but did not seek their permission, asserting that "Passion for service doesn't need permission."
James has a history of running statewide, having previously sought a U.S. Senate seat unsuccessfully in 2018 and 2020. He stated he has outperformed the top of the ticket in prior elections and has high name recognition across the state.
He joins a field of candidates vying for the governorship in 2026. A columnist wrote that James sees his bid as a mission to return home and believes the state's potential is slipping away. James stated he was excited for the opportunity to take his experience in combat and business leadership to benefit the state.
