PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP visited Selfridge Air National Guard Base on April 29, marking the first 100 days of his second term in office. The stop in Michigan’s Macomb County included remarks at the military installation.

Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer joined President Trump at the base. Whitmer stated her attendance aimed to support troops stationed at the base and advocate for securing its future operations.

Michigan political leaders seek a new mission for Selfridge as the base's A-10 aircraft are scheduled for phaseout. Securing a replacement fighter mission is a top priority for the state. The base contributes an estimated $850 million to Michigan’s economy.

Gov. Whitmer has worked with the Trump administration to benefit the state despite a strained relationship during his first term. Discussions about the base’s future have occurred previously, including during a meeting in the Oval Office where other state matters were also addressed.

President Trump has publicly acknowledged Gov. Whitmer’s efforts regarding the base. He previously described her advocacy as a very noble cause.

Following the base visit, President Trump is scheduled to speak at a rally at Macomb Community College. Gov. Whitmer is not expected to attend this event. President Trump's remarks at the base were scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. ET.

The visit occurred as President Trump completed his first 100 days in a second term. His policies have drawn attention, including trade tariffs that have affected Michigan industries.
