A Michigan congressman introduced articles of impeachment against former President Donald Trump on Monday, labeling him a "clear and present danger" to the nation's democracy.
Rep. Shri Thanedar, a Democrat serving his second term, announced he filed seven articles alleging actions including obstruction of justice, abuse of executive power, usurpation of appropriations power, bribery and corruption, and "tyrannical overreach."
Rep. Shri Thanedar files seven articles of impeachment against Trump claimed that Trump has repeatedly demonstrated he is "unfit to serve as President."
The impeachment effort is widely seen as having little chance of advancing in the Republican-controlled House of Representatives. Republicans control both chambers of Congress following recent elections.
White House spokesperson Liz Huston defended Trump's actions, stating they are "fully lawful and firmly rooted in the will of the American people." Huston added that President Trump is doing exactly what he promised: securing our border, bringing in trillions of dollars in investment to America, and restoring common sense leadership.Republicans quickly criticized Thanedar's move((Source)), describing it as a political maneuver and a distraction. House Republican Conference Chair Lisa McClain called the move "pathetic."
Thanedar said he was motivated to act by constituents in his district who expressed frustration that Democrats were not doing enough to challenge the Republican president.
The articles reference specific issues, including the mistaken deportation of Kilmar Abrego Garcia and alleged actions by the Department of Government Efficiency.
Trump was impeached twice during his initial term in office, but the Senate did not vote to convict in either instance.
Thanedar's filing coincides with Trump's visit to Michigan this week to mark his first 100 days since returning to the presidency.
