Emergency crews responded to a fire at the Hunt Oil Refinery in West Tuscaloosa on Wednesday after an explosion was heard across the area just before noon. Smoke billowed from the facility, located off Sanders Ferry Road, visible for miles around the city.

Tuscaloosa Fire Rescue Service personnel confirmed they were on scene addressing an active fire at the site, according to spokesperson Holly Whigham. Police also responded to the incident.

Multiple fire trucks and ambulances were dispatched to the refinery location, near the intersection of 21st Street and Joe Mallisham Parkway. Early reports initially described flames and smoke coming from a smokestack at a Tuscaloosa business.

WVUA 23 Chief Meteorologist Richard Scott reported hearing the explosion from his home approximately 16 miles north of the refinery site. The concussive sound reached residents far from the immediate vicinity.

Heavy smoke remained visible above the facility as crews worked to control the situation. The extent of the damage and potential injuries were not immediately known.

Officials continue to assess the scene and gather information regarding the cause of the explosion and fire at the Hunt Oil Tuscaloosa location.
