Actor Kirk Cameron delivered the keynote address at the Southwest Florida Community Prayer Breakfast on May 1, joining attendees for the annual observance of the National Day of Prayer. The gathering at Hammond Stadium at Lee Health Sports Complex brought together individuals from across the region to pray for the nation and community.
Cameron, known for his role as Mike Seaver in the 1980s sitcom Growing Pains, shared his personal testimony of faith during the event. He spoke about transitioning his career focus to faith and family-oriented projects after his time on the popular television show. His work has since included films and series such as Left Behind, Monumental, The Way of the Master, and Fireproof.
The event marked the National Day of Prayer, observed annually on the first Thursday of May. This year's theme was "Pour Out to the God of Hope and Be Filled!".
Cameron told the assembly he perceives a renewed sense of hope and optimism present in the country. He described the faithful as "ground troops in God’s loving army of compassion," suggesting they can make progress moving forward with truth and goodness.
Attendees participated in unified prayer, singing, and exchanged prayer cards. Cameron also spoke about a replica of The National Monument to the Forefathers, highlighting virtues depicted on the statue including faith, morality, education, law, and liberty.
The Southwest Florida event was one of more than 35,000 National Day of Prayer gatherings organized across the United States. Millions of people participated in events praying for blessings on the nation.
The National Day of Prayer was established by a joint resolution of Congress signed by President Harry S. Truman in 1952. The law was amended in 1988 under President Ronald Reagan to fix the date as the first Thursday in May.
Ron Inge, president of Southwest Florida Community Prayer Breakfast, Inc., stated the event helps bring the community together annually. "Year after year, this event brings our community closer in a time of celebration, inspiration and unity," Inge said. "On this beautiful morning, our hearts were touched, and we were reminded of the importance of faith, fellowship and community."
