Police activity led to significant lane closures on the Bay Bridge Wednesday, causing major traffic backups during the afternoon and evening commute.

Multiple eastbound Interstate 80 lanes were shut down near Treasure Island due to an incident involving a person on the bridge structure. The California Highway Patrol confirmed first responders were on the scene. Police activity prompted the response from multiple agencies.

The incident involved a man who was seen climbing on the bridge. Officers reported the man was on both the upper and lower decks before moving beneath the lower deck. Authorities stated the situation involved a person experiencing a mental health crisis.

The San Francisco Department of Emergency Management reported all eastbound lanes were closed at one point. The incident resulted in portions of the Bay Bridge closed to traffic flow.

Law enforcement urged drivers to avoid the area and seek alternate routes due to severe traffic backup on I-80 leading to the bridge. Traffic delays extended into city streets and impacted public transit services, including Muni lines.

CHP communicated updates regarding the incident, including via the platform X in the afternoon.

Eastbound lanes began to reopen later Wednesday evening. However, delays persisted in the area. A westbound lane closure at Treasure Island was also in effect for a period.
