A 22-year-old man died in Paris overnight after being stabbed in the throat, an attack reportedly stemming from an attempted bicycle theft. Police have arrested a suspect in connection with the incident.
The victim was fatally wounded late Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning in the city's 19th arrondissement near the Porte de Pantin area. He was taken to a hospital but was later pronounced dead.
Authorities said the incident occurred around 00:30 local time on Rue de la Marseillaise. The victim, who lived in nearby Pantin, was with a group of friends when they confronted a man allegedly trying to steal a bicycle.
According to initial reports, the suspect fled, and the victim pursued him. The confrontation escalated when the suspect turned and attacked the young man with a knife.
Despite the severe injury, the victim managed to reach police officers conducting a roadside check nearby at the Place de la Porte de Pantin. He identified his attacker before collapsing.
Police officers provided immediate assistance, but the victim was in cardio-respiratory arrest upon the arrival of firefighters and SAMU medical teams. He was declared deceased at 1 a.m.
Officers quickly apprehended the 28-year-old suspect in the area. He was reportedly in possession of two knives and brass knuckles when taken into custody.
The suspect was unknown to police services prior to the arrest. Investigators are examining the circumstances of the alleged theft attempt and the subsequent fatal stabbing. An investigation for murder has been opened by the parquet of Paris.
