A National Grid worker suffered serious injuries Thursday when a gas main ruptured in this south Brooklyn neighborhood, forcing residents from their homes. Crews had been working on the line in the street.

The incident happened around 5:45 p.m. near the intersection of 86th Street and Colonial Road. Emergency crews responded quickly to the scene.

According to National Grid, their personnel were conducting routine repair work on a natural gas transmission main. During these repairs, an unexpected incident occurred, leading to the sudden release of gas.

One National Grid employee was hurt. That worker received serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

As a precaution, authorities ordered the evacuation of all buildings on 86th Street between Colonial Road and Ridge Boulevard. Residents left their homes while utility crews worked to contain the leak.

National Grid crews worked alongside fire department officials and city agencies. Their joint efforts focused on securing the area and stopping the gas flow.

Workers successfully shut down the gas supply to the affected section of the main. Valves controlling the flow at either end of the line were closed, bringing the leak under control.

No other injuries among residents or first responders were reported during the incident or the subsequent evacuation. For More Brooklyn news, updates on local events often follow these types of incidents. Find More Local News coverage across the metropolitan area.
