East Main Street in Newark is closed following a multi-vehicle crash that occurred late Tuesday afternoon. Police warned drivers to avoid the area and find alternate routes after the collision happened near Center Street and South Chapel Street.

The accident took place just before 5 p.m. on April 29. Multiple vehicles were involved, according to initial reports. A rental moving truck or van may have been among the vehicles involved in the incident.

The scene of the crash was reported to be on Main Street by the old Post Office.

Several people were struck in the crash, according to AETNA Fire reporting from the scene.

Newark police announced the road closure shortly before 5 p.m. Tuesday. They have not released official reports on the status of those injured.

Officials stated the roadway would likely remain closed for an extended period while the Newark Police Department Traffic Unit investigates.
