Evacuations occurred and transit was disrupted Wednesday in Manhattan's Morningside Heights neighborhood after a high-pressure gas line was struck during excavation work. Authorities responded to reports of the leak just before 11 a.m. at 3081 Broadway.
The location is situated between West 122nd and LaSalle E streets. Con Edison stated a leak was detected on a gas main, although the main did not rupture.
FDNY Assistant Chief of Operations John Sarrocco confirmed a high-pressure gas main fractured during a street excavation procedure taking place on Broadway.
Seven buildings in the immediate area were evacuated as a precaution. The Manhattan School of Music, located on Claremont Avenue, was among several locations cleared.
A loud noise was reported through the area when the leak occurred, but it stopped as repair operations commenced. Gas service was shut off to some customers, and valves were secured by NYC emergency officials.
Subway service on the 1 line was suspended in both directions between 96th Street and 168th Street-Washington Heights while first responders conducted an investigation. Service has since been restored with some delays.
Road closures were implemented near West 122nd Street and Broadway. Officials advised drivers to find alternative routes to avoid the impacted zone.
Authorities reported no injuries in the incident. The leak was capped shortly after noon, according to the FDNY. Residents suspecting a gas leak nyc or smelling gas are urged to leave the area immediately and call 911 from a safe location.
