The National Weather Service confirmed Monday that a Tornado touched down Sunday afternoon in East Cocalico Township, Lancaster County, causing property damage.
The weather service office in State College rated the Tornado an EF0 on the Enhanced Fujita Scale.
It struck around 1:30 p.m. Sunday, traveling along a path about 10 feet wide and 500 feet long between Martzall and White Oak roads. Wind speeds were estimated at 80-85 mph. The weather event was on the ground for roughly one minute.
A two-story barn was destroyed at a property on White Oak Road. The structure’s second floor and contents were found deposited into a large white pine tree near the house.
Property owner David Borrell reported the damage after getting up Sunday afternoon. He said he had been sleeping and did not hear the storm hit.
Borrell said garden tractors in the barn were not damaged, but a leaf bagger and buckets stored on the second floor ended up in the tree.
The Tornado also destroyed two sheds and damaged siding on other properties in the area. A children’s playset belonging to a neighbor was also destroyed.
Residents described the storm sounding like a "freight train" as it passed through the neighborhood near Martzall Road. No injuries were reported.
Sunday’s event marks the 37th Tornado recorded in Lancaster County since 1950, according to weather service data.
"I’m very thankful it didn’t hit my house," Borrell said. "I was very fortunate."
