Houston's restaurant scene saw changes through April, marked by new businesses, notable closures, and specific dishes drawing attention. Industry observers tracked activity across the metropolitan area.
Among the month's culinary highlights were specific dishes recognized by local critics. Restaurant critic Bao Ong shared favorites from recent experiences, offering insight into options from different parts of the city.
Featured selections included the ceviche at Alora, noted for its Peruvian and Vietnamese influences, and carrot cavatelli served at Camaraderie in the Heights. Another dish highlighted was the French fries at Chardon, prepared using duck fat and beef tallow.
Other recommendations included the large banh xeo crepe at Com Ga Houston in Asiatown, and the smoked turkey at CorkScrew BBQ, located north of the city in Spring. Deviled crabs at Credence and papaya salad at Ema also made the list. Additional mentions included the beef brisket pot at Hong Kong Food Street and almond joy kakigori at Kira. Sweet options like the strawberry roll from La Crumb pop-ups received notice as well.
The month also saw significant business developments. The second location for Bun B's Trill Burgers opened in Spring, expanding the brand's reach outside the city core ahead of a planned Houston proper opening.
New dining spots emerged across Houston. These included Agnes and Sherman, an Asian American diner, and several new coffee shops, one linked to Top Chef alums Henry Lu and Evelyn Garcia. A tasting menu concept called The Chef's House also gained attention for its unusual private setting.
April brought restaurant closures as well. Genesis Steakhouse closed after 12 years. Owner Jason Goldstein cited issues with its kosher certification from the Houston Kashruth Association as a factor. Good Dog Houston, a gourmet hot dog business, also ended its operations after approximately 15 years. Other closures included Avenida Brazil steakhouse and a Le Madeline location.
The Houston food landscape continues to evolve with new places opening and others closing. Stadium dining at Daikin Park saw updates for the baseball season. Lists of new brunch spots, including Leeland House, Melrose, MF Lobster and Seafood, Okto, and Finn Hall, circulated as locals explored dining options.
