Paul Lee, a key figure in the Grand Rapids dining scene, died Saturday, May 3, after battling cancer. He was 51.
Mr. Lee was a co-owner of All In Hospitality, a company that launched several popular restaurants in the city.
Among the establishments he founded with his wife, Jessica, are The Winchester, Donkey Taqueria, and Hancock. These locations became well-known dining destinations in the East Hills neighborhood along Wealthy Street SE. The Winchester, his first restaurant on that street, opened in 2008 at 648 Wealthy St. SE.
Born in Seoul, South Korea, Mr. Lee moved to the United States after being adopted by Arnold and Kristin Lee following his birth mother's death when he was 3. He graduated from East Grand Rapids High School.
He is survived by his wife, Jessica, and their three sons, Oscar, Harvey, and Otis. Details about his life are available in his obituary.
Funeral services are scheduled for Thursday, May 8, at St. Thomas the Apostle in Grand Rapids at 10:30 a.m., with a luncheon to follow.
Visitation is planned for Wednesday, May 7, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Zaagman Memorial Chapel, located at 2800 Burton Street SE in Grand Rapids.
A Celebration of Life event will take place on May 16 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Eastern Avenue Hall. Individuals seeking information on providing support can find resources online.
Ciara Taylor, director of operations at All In Hospitality, spoke about Mr. Lee's impact.
"He was our shining light," Taylor said. "He guided the way for us and lit the path any innovation and inspiration that we had. It all started with Paul."
