A Michigan State Police trooper was shot early Monday on Detroit's west side during an investigation. The individual who authorities say opened fire on the trooper was killed when troopers returned fire.

The shooting occurred around 4:30 a.m. in the 20200 block of Murray Hill. Troopers with the MSP Metropolitan Detroit Auto Recovery Team were conducting an investigation in the area at the time.

According to MSP, a 23-year-old man came out of a residence and began shooting at the troopers.

The trooper sustained three gunshot wounds, including one that struck his vest. Other troopers transported him to a hospital. He is reported to be in serious but stable condition, and officials credit the vest with saving his life.

Troopers fired back at the suspect, killing the Detroit man.

The Michigan State Police and Detroit Police Department are investigating the incident. Further details were not immediately released.

The Detroit News reported that the investigation remained ongoing hours later with streets blocked and a vehicle towed from the scene. Investigators also canvassed the neighborhood, speaking with residents.

This shooting follows other recent incidents in Michigan involving law enforcement officers using deadly force. Ingham County Sheriff's deputies fatally shot a man last month, and Warren police officers were involved in a fatal shooting in March. The Michigan Attorney General's office recently declined to charge troopers in two separate fatal shootings last year in Hillsdale County and Flint.
