DALLAS – Authorities today detailed how the suspect in Tuesday's school shooting entered Wilmer-Hutchins High School, bypassing security measures. Police confirmed the 17-year-old suspect, Tracy Haynes Jr., is a student at the school.
Investigators say security video shows another student opening a side door to allow Haynes inside. This entry point allowed him to avoid the school's main entrance with metal detectors.
After entering, police allege Haynes began firing at students in a hallway. Reports indicate he shot indiscriminately before taking a shot at one student unable to escape.
Four students suffered non-life-threatening gunshot injuries. Two have left the hospital, while two others remain for care. A fifth student may also have been struck, according to reports.
Officials state the shooting appears targeted. While police investigate a potential gang connection, they believe Haynes aimed to harm a specific individual.
The suspect fled after the shooting but later turned himself in to police after contacting a non-profit organization that works to reduce gun violence. He told the group he had received threats against his life.
Haynes faces charges of aggravated assault in a mass shooting. His bond is set at $600,000.
This incident marks the second shooting at Wilmer-Hutchins High School in about a year, leading students and parents to voice concerns. Students say they are scared to return to school following the repeated violence.
District leaders acknowledge the security challenge posed by side doors that must unlock from the inside for student movement. They plan to staff these doors for the remainder of the school year and may implement buzzer systems for future security.
