The University of Virginia issued an alert early Monday morning directing people to avoid the Rotunda area. Police are investigating a reported incident.

The alert was sent shortly before 5 AM. An update later stated the situation was stable.

University police are looking into a possible self-inflicted gunshot wound near the central grounds landmark.

Reports from the area around 4:45 AM indicated the sound of two shots fired near Rotunda Alley. A large presence of officers responded to the area and the Lawn in front of the Rotunda.

Information regarding the nature of the incident remains limited as the investigation continues. The University of Virginia Police Department has not released further details.

Students and staff received instructions via the UVA Alert system. While the situation is stable, the advisory to avoid the immediate area remained in effect as of the early morning update. UVA students have been receiving various campus updates recently.
