Keesler Air Force Base entered lockdown Wednesday morning following reports of an active shooter on the installation. Base officials confirmed the base was placed in "lockdown mode" around 9:30 AM ET as an investigation commenced.

The Biloxi Police Department received reports of an active shooter situation but indicated that no evidence had been found to support the claims thus far. Multiple law enforcement personnel responded to the base.

The gates at Keesler AFB were closed as a result of the incident.

Base officials used social media to inform personnel about the situation, stating the incident was "real world" and not part of a training exercise.

A base-wide readiness exercise had been scheduled for Wednesday, but officials clarified that the lockdown incident was separate from the planned activity.

Specific areas north of the hairpin on Ploesti Drive and north of Meadows Drive were reported to remain on lockdown as the investigation continued.

The military base is located in Biloxi, Mississippi, on the Gulf Coast.

Keesler Air Force Base is home to approximately 5,100 active duty military members, 1,625 civil service employees, 13,000 retirees, 4,763 family members, and 2,700 contractors.
