Forecasters issued alerts across Arizona this weekend as conditions leading to a high wind warning developed. Strong winds, low humidity, and dry ground elevated fire danger in multiple regions.

Wind Advisories took effect Saturday along the Mogollon Rim and across northeastern Arizona. Forecasters expected winds from the south and southwest at 20 to 30 mph with gusts reaching 50 mph at times in these areas.

By Sunday, the Wind Advisory extended into eastern Arizona. Gusts shy of 50 mph were tracked in northern and eastern Arizona.

Conditions prompting a high wind warning also increased the possibility of blowing dust, particularly in the southeastern part of the state. A Blowing Dust Advisory went into effect Sunday for parts of Cochise, Graham, and Greenlee Counties.

Humidity levels in the single digits contributed to the risk. The dry air coupled with strong winds creates a situation where any fire that starts could spread rapidly.

Red Flag Warnings, also called Fire Weather Warnings, were in effect Saturday along the Mogollon Rim and across northeastern Arizona. These warnings expanded into southeastern Arizona on Sunday.

Officials remind residents to use caution outdoors. Recommendations include avoiding flicking cigarettes, refraining from outdoor shooting, and ensuring vehicles do not drag material that could cause ignition on dry grass.

The wind system brings cooler air across central Arizona. Valley temperatures dropped into the mid-80s Saturday and the upper 70s Sunday. Overnight lows settled into the 50s.

Temperatures are forecast to rise again next week. Conditions will be sunny and dry early in the week, with highs returning to the low 90s by Wednesday. More weather information is available online.
