A Tornado Watch is in effect for portions of eastern New Mexico. The watch area includes Chaves, Curry, De Baca, Eddy, Lea, and Roosevelt counties.
The watch remains in effect through Monday evening, with termination times varying by source, noted as 8 p.m. or 9 p.m. Severe thunderstorms carry the potential for damaging winds and hail.
Isolated tornadoes are possible within the watch area. Storms are moving generally northeast at around 20 mph.
The National Weather Service advisory stated that severe storms capable of producing a tornado were observed earlier in the afternoon. Ping-pong-ball-sized hail is expected with some storms.
A Tornado Warning was issued for parts of De Baca and Chaves counties earlier in the day. Radar indicated rotation, prompting the warning.
In addition to the Tornado Watch, a flash flood warning was issued for areas including Santa Fe, Agua Fire, and Cerrillos. Heavy rainfall is forecast to continue.
Further rainfall between 1 and 3 inches is expected across the watch area through tonight. This increases the potential for flash flooding.
The National Weather Service advises seeking shelter inside a well-built structure, away from windows.
