Netflix released a teaser trailer Monday for the third and final season of its hit Korean drama Squid Game, announcing the finale season will premiere globally June 27.
The preview offers a look at protagonist Gi-hun returning to the deadly competition following a failed rebellion at the end of Season 2. Gi-hun, played by Lee Jung-jae, is thrust back into the game setting determined to dismantle the organization behind it.
The trailer shows Pink Guards delivering Player 456 Gi-hun in the signature black box coffin to the player dormitory. He awakens among other players.
A new game appears to involve a giant gumball machine, dispensing red and blue balls that determine the fate or designation of players. Allies and families are separated based on the colors drawn.
Familiar characters are seen returning, including the Front Man, detective Hwang Jun-ho, and several players from previous rounds like Myung-gi (Player 333), Dae-ho (Player 388), and Hyun-ju (Player 120). The pink guard No-eul also appears.
The Front Man, played by Lee Byung-hun, is revealed to have previously infiltrated the players' ranks disguised as Player 001. How Did Squid Game Season 2 End? Season 2 concluded with Gi-hun leading an uprising that resulted in the death of his friend Jung-bae at the hands of the Front Man, whose true identity is In-ho, a former winner using the name Young-il.
The teaser trailer concludes with the sound of a newborn baby crying.
Director Hwang Dong-hyuk discussed Gi-hun's state following the events of the prior season.
"In the third season, having that sense of huge guilt and sense of failure weighing heavily on him — how is Gi-hun going to carry on his mission? That’s the story that’ll further unfold," Hwang told Variety.
