Amazon MGM Studios has acquired worldwide distribution rights for the upcoming sequel to "The Beekeeper," starring Jason Statham. The deal is valued by sources at comfortably north of $50 million.
Jason Statham is set to reprise his role in the film, which is scheduled to begin production in the fall. Miramax is producing the sequel. The agreement with Amazon MGM Studios was negotiated by Miramax.
The first film, "The Beekeeper," debuted in January 2024 and has recently performed well on streaming platforms. As of May 5, the action movie ranked No. 9 on Prime Video's top 10 movies chart in the United States, according to FlixPatrol.
News of the sequel's development comes as the original film finds a new audience through streaming. "The Beekeeper" earned $162.6 million globally against an estimated $40 million budget.
The action thriller centered on a man named Adam Clay, a former operative of a secret organization, who seeks revenge after his landlady is targeted in a phishing scam. The film received mixed reviews, with a 72% rating on the Tomatometer.
Timo Tjahjanto is attached to direct the sequel from a screenplay written by Umair Aleem. The project's progression follows its earlier announcement this year.
Jason Statham remains a prominent figure in action cinema, known for roles in standalone features like "Snatch" and his involvement in major franchises such as "Fast & Furious" and "The Expendables." His recent work also includes "A Working Man."
The streaming success of "The Beekeeper" provides additional momentum for the sequel as it moves toward production later this year.
