The winners of the 2025 Pulitzer Prizes were announced Monday from Columbia University in New York. Awards recognize outstanding work in U.S. journalism.

The staff of The Washington Post received the Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News. The award recognizes coverage of the July 13 attempt to assassinate then-presidential candidate Donald Trump. Their reporting included storytelling and analysis using police reporting and audio/visual forensics.Reuters won the Pulitzer Prize for Investigative Reporting. The news organization was recognized for an exposé on lax regulation that impacts the availability of fentanyl in the United States.The Pulitzer Prize for Explanatory Reporting went to Azam Ahmed and Christina Goldbaum of The New York Times and contributing writer Matthieu Aikins. Their work examined factors contributing to the U.S. failure in Afghanistan.Alissa Zhu, Nick Thieme and Jessica Gallagher of The Baltimore Banner and The New York Times won the Pulitzer Prize for Local Reporting. Their series focused on Baltimore’s fentanyl crisis and its impact on older Black men.The staff of The Wall Street Journal earned the Pulitzer Prize for National Reporting. The award recognizes reporting on the political and personal life of Elon Musk, including conversations with Russian President Vladimir Putin.The staff of The New Yorker won the Pulitzer Prize for Audio Reporting for their podcast "In the Dark." The four-year investigation covered the murder of 25 unarmed Iraqi civilians in Haditha during the Iraq War.ProPublica received the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service. The award honors reporting by Kavitha Surana, Lizzie Presser, Cassandra Jaramillo and Stacy Kranitz on pregnant women who died after care delays in states with strict abortion laws.A special citation was awarded to the late Chuck Stone. He was recognized for his work covering the Civil Rights Movement, his role as the first Black columnist at the Philadelphia Daily News, and co-founding the National Association of Black Journalists 50 years ago.

Other Pulitzer Prizes were awarded in categories including International Reporting, Feature Writing, Commentary, Criticism, Editorial Writing, Illustrated Reporting and Commentary, Breaking News Photography, and Feature Photography. Awards were also presented in Letters and Drama.
