Recent developments in Saudi Arabia are reflecting changes underway in the capital, Riyadh. A new film offers views into parts of the city's social landscape, while a new airline based there unveils its passenger cabin design.
The film, "Night Courier," provides perspective on the everyday lives of working classes in Riyadh. The movie follows a call center worker who becomes a delivery driver to manage financial pressures.
The story touches on social issues and the contrasts between wealth and poverty in the rapidly changing urban environment.
"Night Courier" has seen domestic success and is now showing internationally, signaling growth in the Saudi film industry. Government backing supports training and promotion in the sector, with events like the Red Sea Film Festival playing a role. Efforts align with plans led by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to use arts and culture in the country's development.
Separately, Riyadh Air, the kingdom's new national airline, has revealed the interior design for its initial fleet.
Designed by PriestmanGoode, the cabin draws inspiration from Riyadh's architecture, featuring patterns and lighting intended to evoke the city's skyline.
The airline will operate from King Khalid International Airport and plans domestic and international routes to over 100 destinations.
Karim Sader, a political analyst specializing in Gulf countries, described the film's official approval as a sign that authorities intend to show that artistic life exists in Saudi Arabia and allows certain topics to be presented.
"It raises a social issue but does not undermine the government. It remains a controlled gesture of openness," Sader said.
