Veteran broadcaster Al Roker covered the Met Gala red carpet for the first time Monday evening, joining NBC News' coverage of the annual event. Roker's assignment for the 2025 gala marked a career first for the longtime personality.
Roker, 70, stepped into the role during the Today show's Third Hour, temporarily filling in for co-host Sheinelle Jones, who has been absent. Today co-host Craig Melvin noted Roker was trying something new with the assignment.
Adding another layer to the evening, Roker's wife, journalist Deborah Roberts, also covered the Met Gala red carpet for ABC News. Roberts has reported from the event in previous years.
The couple had a brief moment on the red carpet, sharing an exchange as they worked. Roberts commented on Roker's appearance.
The 2025 Met Gala centered on the theme "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style." Roker wore a black and gray suit with a top hat, while Roberts appeared in a white gown with ankle-length pants and her own top hat. The event serves as a benefit for the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute. Vogue's Anna Wintour helms the gala.
Roker lives blocks from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, noting he could walk to the venue, while Roberts might prefer transportation due to footwear.
Speaking during their red carpet encounter, Roberts told Roker, "Nice to see you. You look great."
