Echelon Noir Productions presented its first Black Hair Reimagined: The New Era of Beauty show Friday in New York City. The event, held ahead of the Met Gala, showcased artistic hair creations by prominent stylists.
The show is the brainchild of stylist and creative director Jarrod Lacks and hairstylist Jawara Wauchope. The founders aimed to bring a modernized version of traditional Black hair shows to the fashion and beauty world. Wauchope stated the event sought to celebrate Black hair and recognize talent within the industry.
Actress and beauty founder Tracee Ellis Ross hosted the runway event. Ross, wearing her natural curls, addressed the audience, referencing generations of Black hair styling practices from braids to washes.
Five hairstylists presented work, each collaborating with a fashion stylist. This included Yusef Williams, Vernon François, Cyndia Harvey, Malcolm Marquez, and Jawara Wauchope. Their presentations paid homage to various influences, from Miami roots and desert landscapes to otherworldly concepts.
Backstage operations involved a range of beauty professionals. Sir John and Sheika Daley designed makeup looks, while manicurist Dawn Sterling created 3-D nail designs for some models.
The show referenced the history of Black hair shows, drawing inspiration from events like the Bronner Bros shows that began decades ago. Organizers described the event as a blend of artistry and community.
Models wore sculptural and intricate styles featuring extensions, crocheted textures, braids, and high-top fades. Wauchope's closing segment reinterpreted techniques from the 1980s and 1990s.
Attendees watched presentations featuring diverse hair art pieces on models including Julez Smith, Alton Mason, and Anok Yai. Guests received gift bags containing various products following the show.
Echelon Noir Productions plans to hold the Black Hair Reimagined event annually. Lacks stated the show aims to elevate emerging artists and inspire future creatives.
