Sony Interactive Entertainment's PlayStation Studios unit has announced the addition of a new internal development studio, TeamLFG. The studio originated at Bungie and brings together developers from across the industry.
Hermen Hulst, CEO of the Studio Business Group at Sony Interactive Entertainment, stated the group was now fully formed and ready to be introduced.
TeamLFG's developers include veterans who have worked on titles such as Destiny, Halo, League of Legends, Fortnite, Roblox, and Rec Room, alongside industry newcomers. The studio maintains headquarters in Bellevue, Washington, with staff working both on-site and remotely across the United States and Canada.
The studio stated its mission centers on creating games where players can find friendship, community, and belonging. The "LFG" in its name represents "Looking For Group," reflecting this focus.
The team plans to create immersive multiplayer worlds driven by action gameplay that players can master over time. They intend to build games alongside communities, inviting players into the development process through early access playtests to react to feedback throughout a game's live service lifespan.
The first project is a team-based action game drawing inspiration from fighting games, platformers, MOBAs, life sims, and frog-type games. It will be set in a lighthearted, comedic world within a new mythic, science-fantasy universe.
The announcement follows reports that Sony had canceled two unannounced live service games earlier this year after the recent performance of other titles in the genre like Concord. However, the company has also seen success with live service titles like Helldivers 2. This suggests a continued investment in the live service model despite mixed results.
Industry reports speculate the studio's first game may be a project codenamed "Gummy Bears," a MOBA-style PvP game that originated at Bungie before transitioning to a new PlayStation studio.
“Hello, world. It’s a delight to meet you, and we’re very grateful to be joining PlayStation Studios," TeamLFG stated. "Our first game is a team-based action game that draws inspiration from fighting games, platformers, MOBAs, life sims, and frog-type games. Players will inhabit a lighthearted, comedic world set in brand-new, mythic, science-fantasy universe. We can’t wait to reveal more."
